The Rain by W.H Davies

Stanza.1

I hear leaves drinking rain

I hear rich leaves on tops

Giving the poor beneath

Drop after drop

Tis a sweat noise to hear

These green leaves drinking near.

Stanza.2

And when the sun comes out

After this rain shall stop

A wondrous light will fill

Each dark round drop

I hope the sun shines bright

It will be a lovely sight.

Theme of the poem

It is a short and simply composed poem about a beautiful phenomenon of nature.

When it rains, the musical sound created by its falling drops over top and lower leaves, is sweet and gay. It is the privilege of the topper (top leaves) to enjoy the comforts and luxuries of life first of all. Whatever is left (the remains) trickles down onto the poor leaves (the poor people).Very aesthetically the poet, using the symbols of top and poor leaves ,projects the difference between high ups and the men of straw(lay men).

In the second stanza, the poet is optimistic. He is of the view that after the rain stops, the sun will brighten well and illuminate the world. Each and every dark drop of rain water will be lit up by a luminous light. A beautiful rainbow will appear in the sky and it will be a worth-noting sight.
